About Us

Our Mission

To promote and protect our Mohawk identity – encompassing our language, art, history, values, and traditions – by sharing original multimedia content with our community and our neighbors. We are dedicated to providing an essential service that informs, connects, and strengthens the spirit of Kanehsatà:ke.

Our Vision

To establish a sustainable, state-of-the-art permanent broadcasting home at the heart of our community. By securing our frequency and increasing our reach, we aim to ensure that the voice of Kanehsatà:ke remains a constant, powerful presence on the airwaves for generations to come, standing resilient against technical challenges and environmental hardships.

Our History

The Spark of Revival (2018)

In late 2018, the future of our beloved CKHQ 101.7 FM was under threat. Facing “dead air” and a frequency takeover attempt by an outside station, over 50 community members gathered at the United Church Hall. That night, “Reviving Kanehsatà:ke Radio” (RKR) was born, and a dedicated working group was formed to bring the station back to life.

Building a Foundation (2019)

We evolved into Mohawk MultiMedia, a federally registered not-for-profit governed by community-led bylaws. The road was not easy; the original station building was condemned, and the technical infrastructure needed a total overhaul. Under the leadership of Karahkó:hare Syd Gaspe and a team of veteran experts, we successfully fought to protect our 101.7 frequency before the CRTC.

Resilience Through Crisis

Our commitment was tested early on:

  • The 2019 Floods: When the community faced rising waters, we launched “Flood Watch Radio” in just 36 hours. Operating out of a neighbor’s fishing shack with borrowed equipment, we proved that local radio is a vital lifeline during emergencies.

  • The 2020 Pandemic: On April 2, 2020 – exactly two years after the revival began – CKHQ officially returned to the airwaves. Despite the onset of COVID-19, we broadcasted remotely from a donated house trailer to keep our community connected.

Reaching New Heights (2024)

Following several years of persistence and technical planning, 2024 marked a major milestone in our physical infrastructure. After months of construction, we successfully completed our new 180-foot radio tower.

This height increase was a strategic victory for the station, allowing our signal to broadcast significantly stronger and reach further than ever before. This tower represents our commitment to securing our frequency permanently and ensuring that every member of our community – and our neighbors – can tune in to the voice of Kanehsatà:ke with crystal clarity.

Looking Ahead

Today, the “ball is rolling” toward a permanent future. Having identified a new site near the Riverside Elders Home, we are currently finalizing blueprints for a modern facility. Through the incredible support of Kanehsatà:ke Chase the Ace, local organizations, and individual donors, we continue to raise the funds necessary to complete this $900,000 project and ensure our voices are never silenced again.
